Breaking Point

Episode 2 – Sergio Cilli: Navigating Fear.

The Episode I Was Too Scared To Post by Charlenè Brouwer

I have been sitting with this episode for weeks.

Not because it wasn’t ready. Not because the sound wasn’t right or the edit needed more work.

Because I was scared.

Scared to put it out into the world. Scared of what people would think. Scared that somehow, after all the hours I poured into this — the late nights, the editing, the re-editing — it still wouldn’t be good enough. After all, I made full-feature documentaries for a living, and I’m used to working on feature films… I filmed episodes of the podcast with amazing guests, but I never released any of them. They were all shot on cinema cameras. I would identify the mistake in each episode and any reason it wasn’t ready.

And then Sergio’s words that stopped me in my tracks:

“I was petrified to put myself out there…and I think there are people out there that just stay in that space forever…”

It felt like he was talking to me. I have been caught off guard, and suddenly the episode turned into navigating fear.

The truth is, the host of “The Breaking Point” is completely paralysed by the very thing my guests and I spent an hour talking about. I couldn’t publish the episodes because they sat so close to my own truth that I’m still navigating my own potential breaking point.

So I did what Sergio Cilli was teaching other actors and creatives.

I posted it anyway.

Sergio is not someone I stumbled across. He is someone I chose – deliberately and with my whole heart – because his story is the kind that doesn’t make the highlight reel but rather a take on what is real. It lives in the quiet moments between the auditions, the rejections, the pivots, and the sleepless nights. Sergio decided to face all of his fears so that he could get to a place he hadn’t planned to go.

He is an Emmy Award-winning writer and director. A working actor. One of the most recognised faces in the world of A.I. Reels — a space he entered not with confidence, but with terror. I really loved how he kept talking about his wife in the interview and how she is clearly such a big, supportive figure in his life. It was a beautiful thing to edit when he talked about her and how she would tell him how to deal with his fears.

He was afraid of A.I., afraid of what it meant for actors. Afraid of an industry shifting so fast beneath his feet that keeping up felt impossible.

And his therapist — his actual therapist — looked him in the eye and said:

“Don’t you dare quit.”

I did Sergio’s workshop from South Africa while people around me shook their heads and called it a scam.

It wasn’t a scam.

Because Sergio doesn’t just teach craft. He teaches courage. He gives back to actors who are standing exactly where he once stood – at the edge of their own breaking point – and he says:

Keep going. I promise it’s worth it. Or he would make a joke about not trying.

What started as a thought in the shower became one of the most-watched AI series on the internet.

He now has a Webby Award nomination to his name.

And he still shows up for other actors. Every single time.

In Episode 2 of The Breaking Point, I had the joy of interviewing him remotely via Zoom.

He said something in our conversation that I haven’t been able to shake:

“Fear does not go away. You just learn not to listen to it.”

I think about that every time I feel the familiar pull to hold back. To wait until it’s perfect. To post tomorrow instead of today.

Fear doesn’t go away.

But you don’t have to listen to it.

So here I am. Posting the episode I was too scared to share. Telling the story, I almost (again) kept to myself. And I’ll post the other episodes that I have tucked away.

Showing up — imperfectly, honestly, completely — with my Afrikaans accent and all, because that is what The Breaking Point is all about.

Episode 2 with Sergio Cilli is live now.

It is 33 minutes of raw, honest conversation about fear, resilience, AI reels, and what it really means to keep going when everything in you wants to stop.

I hope it meets you exactly where you are today.
